Embrace & Empower: Art Exhibit Opening and Fundraiser Featuring Photography by Wendy Halperin
This exhibit shares powerful portraits of LGBTQ+ youth and young adults in Adams County, honoring their stories and self-expression.
Opening night is May 30th from 6–8pm at Waldo’s and Company. The portraits will also be on display at Gettysburg Community Theatre, with both exhibits up through June.
The project was offered free to participants as a way to help them feel seen and valued. Each person received individual and group photos, with the option to be included in the public exhibit. As one participant put it:
“It's so important to see queer people existing in a variety of manners and ways. Recording queer people and who they are is something I deeply treasure, and I miss all of my LGBTQIA+ ancestors who came before me but never had the opportunity to be known or seen. This project evokes that; the youths who get to grow old and the youths who are not dead yet. It says we are here, we are here, we are here.”
The exhibit is also a fundraiser supporting local nonprofits that empower LGBTQ+ youth, including Waldo’s and Company, Gettysburg Community Theatre, and Gettysburg Pride. Donations are accepted at both exhibit locations through June 30th or on Waldo’s Events Page https://www.waldosandco.com/events.
Sponsored by the Nan Hatzes Memorial Fund Grant, Gettysburg Pride, and the 2025 STAR Grant from the Adams County Arts Council.
